Mr. Biden’s selection positions the 74-year-old labor economist to lead his administration’s efforts to further the recovery from the destruction caused by the coronavirus pandemic and shutdowns....

On November 22, LA County’s Department of Health announced it would suspend outdoor, on-premise dining in Los Angeles beginning November 25 at 10 p.m. in order to slow the spread of COVID-19. In the past few weeks, coronavirus cases have increased 108 percent from the beginning of November. Restaurants across the city are disheartened at the loss of outdoor dining, which provided much needed income and jobs to operators and workers alike. However, health director Dr. Barbara Ferrer gave some illuminating rationales for why the county decided to put a three-week cessation on outdoor dining. Ferrer said in a call with media today that the most prominent one they know is dining on-premises puts people of different households within the same
WASHINGTON — In between leading his law office’s response to the coronavirus and working on high-profile legal cases, Alejandro N. Mayorkas has spent the past four years studying the Trump administration’s immigration agenda, often answering questions from his law partners on the legality of President Trump’s policies. His attentiveness should be helpful as he sets out to roll most of them back.On Monday, President-elect Joseph R. Biden Jr. nominated Mr. Mayorkas to be the first Latino and first immigrant to lead the Homeland Security Department, the sprawling and troubled agency responsible for most of the nation’s policies on immigration, legal and illegal.“It is no small task to lead the Department of Homeland Security, but I will work to restore faith in
This fall, the European Parliament hit on the solution of linking funding in the bloc’s new $2.1 trillion budget to respect for the rule of law. The two Central European countries have responded by blocking the budget’s adoption, which requires a unanimous vote — and thereby threatening critical funding not only for themselves but also for other nations hard-hit by the covid-19 pandemic. A continued impasse could exacerbate what is already a serious economic crisis within the European Union. But if the blackmail by Hungary and Poland succeeds, Europe’s commitment to democracy will be fatally compromised. Whatever the cost, it is essential that E.U. leaders not give in. The trouble in the two former Soviet-bloc countries centers on their governments’ efforts to
A California grand jury has indicted Apple’s head of global security on charges that he tried to bribe Santa Clara County officials to procure firearms (CCW) licenses, according to a news release. Santa Clara district attorney Jeff Rosen alleges that Thomas Moyer offered 200 iPads — worth about $70,000 — to Capt. James Jensen and Undersheriff Rick Sung in the Santa Clara County sheriff’s office, in exchange for four concealed firearms licenses for Apple employees. The charges came after a two-year investigation. “In the case of four CCW licenses withheld from Apple employees, Undersheriff Sung and Cpt. Jensen managed to extract from Thomas Moyer a promise that Apple would donate iPads to the Sheriff’s Office,” Rosen said in the news release.
But the news that General Motors has abruptly withdrawn its support for the Trump administration’s efforts to revoke California’s legal right to place stringent limits on auto emissions, instead siding with California, crystallizes the point in a new way, one that bodes well for the possibilities of Joe Biden’s presidency. “President-elect Biden recently said, ‘I believe that we can own the 21st century car market again by moving to electric vehicles.’ We at General Motors couldn’t agree more,” Mary Barra, the General Motors chief executive, wrote in a letter Monday to leaders of some of the nation’s largest environmental groups. Barra’s letter also noted that Biden has pledged to reverse Trump’s approach by taking fast action to reduce vehicular emissions, and added: “We
